The 260m stretch of open beach, in front of Golf Course Wall, had been eroding since the Whitstable Coastal Defence Scheme was completed in 2006. Canterbury City Council designed and constructed four new timber groynes to fill the gap and retain shingle more effectively. After completion of the timber groynes beach recycling was undertaken to increase the beach to design level and reduce the risk of flooding to the low lying town of Whitstable behind the seawall. The coastal works is valued at approximately £180,000 and was completed mid December 2011.
